To Throw Pillow Or Not To Throw Pillow

Opinions on throw pillows diverge widely – with some believing they are completely unnecessary and that the rest of the decor in a space should do the heavy lifting, or some who believe that a space is never complete without a plump grouping of pillows. Somewhere in between probably makes the most sense — throw pillows don’t have to be all or nothing, and you can decide on a case by case basis given the exact space and your mood.

If there’s enough visual interest in a space already, throw pillows don’t need to be forced just for the sake of it. It’s perfectly fine not to use them, or you can throw on a single accent pillow. It also depends on the vibe you want - if ‘more is more’ is your thing, then feel free to layer pillows in addition to other decorative elements. Comfort is a factor as well – particularly in areas that are designated for hanging out, a nice pile of throw pillows can create a relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

Mixing & Matching Throw Pillows

Deciding which throw pillows go together is a commonly cited concern. Although they are an affordable way to decorate compared to some other things, when buying a few throws at a time, the costs can add up, and the fear of making a mistake is understandable. The beauty of the mix is when there’s contrast but done in a complimentary way. So, here’s a ‘formula’ to pick a pleasing assortment of throw pillows:

  • Choose a color palette — decide which colors you want to bring into the room, whether it’s adding color to a neutral space or complimenting color that’s already in the room.

  • Mix a variety of patterns — patterns always look best when there’s some contrast, so mix together say, a large scale print, a small scale print, a stripe, and a solid with an interesting detail or some combo of those.

  • Put different shapes beside each other — again, contrasting shapes/sizes adds more visual interest. So group large/small square, oblongs, large rectangular.

Arranging Throw Pillows

There are many different ways to arrange pillows — from a single centered pillow to symmetrical groupings to a random assortment. It really comes down to personal preference. You’ll just want to determine the layout before you buy so you’ll know if can order the right quantities and sizes.

Throw Pillow Decor Ideas

Below we’ve grouped throw pillows by style and coloring. You pretty much can’t go from mixing and matching any pillows from these collections. While there is thought put into how the pillows work together in terms of style and coloring, part of the art of mixing and matching pillows is having an element of surprise — one pillow that’s a little bolder than the others, pillows that might seem to clash but that’s what makes the combination striking. So, we strongly urge you to step out of your comfort zone and take a little risk. A strong throw pillow game can be exponential in terms of adding character and warmth to a room.

Haute Boho

While floral and striped throw pillows might seem at odds, they are brought together by a shared color palette and romantic sensibility. Start with stripes and large print florals, then add an accent pillow that’s either a solid, or a floral or stripe with a different color background and/or smaller scale print.

Style

Romantic with a flair for exotic lands (and textiles)

Color palate

Rich, deep colors like burgundy, goldenrod yellow, oxford blue, forest green

How to implement

A single one of these pillows makes a statement on its own. In groupings, we’d suggest laying them out symmetrically, layering the two prints and putting the accent pillow in the center.

Soft Romance

This mix of softly colored prints has a relaxed country feel. The look relies on a panoply of classic prints including chintz, block prints, ticking stripes, and more. There’s no need to be matchy matchy, but do mix up the scale and type of print – the more variety, the better.

Style

English country

Color palate

Soft, faded colors

How to implement

The laidback, vintage feel of these prints lends itself to a random assortment. Ideally, create contrast by putting squares next to oblongs. As always, a symmetrical arrangement can also work.

Timeless & Cheerful

Classics never go out of style, and that’s just what this look is about. Think florals, toile, checks, stripes and other fun small scale prints. Although they’ve been around forever, these prints never looks stuffy because the colors and designs are fresh and full of life for a modern spin.

Style

Classic with a twist

Color palate

Warm blues, greens, yellows with creamy white

How to implement

Choose 2-3 patterns and either stick with squares, with 1-2 on each side of sofa, or a mix of sizes and shapes, arranged symmetrically.

Global Aesthetic

These textiles have an artisanal look owing to their global origins but are used in a traditional setting. Some are made with heritage techniques like ikats and suzanis or other kinds of hand embroidery; other prints are inspired by nature and indigenous cultures.

Style

How to implement

Symmetry lends a bit more formality to these artisan prints, either with oblongs or a mix of square and oblong.

Solo Stunners

For those who are adverse to throw pillows, a solo star may be a good option for you. Whether you feature a single pillow or a few pillows of the same design, it still creates a more streamlined look while adding some flair.
