My Search for the Fluffiest, Most Cloud-like Duvet

I asked people if they had a duvet that they loved. They did, and now I do too.

Updated April 15, 2026 with new recommendations

I recently went on a mission to find a new duvet insert. I had to borrow the duvet from my guest bedroom and found that it was so much better than the one on my bed. Hence my motivation.

It all started when my baby had an accident on my bed, and it soaked through the duvet cover to the duvet. It all had to go in the wash. Since it was later at night, it wasn’t going to dry by the time we went to bed. So, I grabbed the duvet from our guest bed. Boy oh boy, what a treat that was. From the moment I crawled into bed, I felt like I was lying on a cloud – well, the cloud was on top of me technically. The point is, I realized I was missing out. The guest room duvet is made of down, which it turns out makes all the difference. Why had I been settling for down alternative for all these years? I love my guests, but I think I should have a bed that’s as comfortable as theirs! Hence my hunt for a new duvet insert to fit our king size bed.

I figured I’d start by asking people if they had one they loved. It turns out crowdsourcing was a smart idea. I got so many detailed responses that by chance happened to cover a wide range of brands and prices. I was looking for key words like “fluffy”, “cloud-like”, “luxurious”, “best sleep of my life”. Then, I did my own research to confirm these were in fact worthy options before considering myself or passing along to you. I was blown away by the quality components of these duvets, backed up by super positive reviews/ratings.

In the process I also got recommendations for pillow inserts and bedding. So I’ll share those too so you’ll have the full package to put the whole bed together and enjoy the most cozy, luxurious sleep of your life.

Notes: Most brands offer different weights and sizes. For the sake of comparison, I focused on midweight and king-size, but of course, you can customize to your needs.

Update: Since this post was written, I’ve had the opportunity to try out a new duvet from the brand of my original duvet. Keep reading to see my thoughts on that and which I’d recommend.

Here's what I choose (and LOVE)...

My Duvet Recommendation

I’ve had such a great experience with Boll & Branch sheets, and just generally think they create incredibly high quality, beautifully designed products. So, I wound up getting their Midweight Down Duvet Insert, and let me tell you, it’s amazing!! Even in the coldest days of winter, I am toasty warm swaddled in this duvet. It’s just so comfortable too — whether I’m lying on top or snuggled underneath, the thick fill of down feels so incredibly luxurious. It frankly makes it hard to get out of bed! Just to note, because it’s on the heavier side, we switch it out in the summertime. On the upside, it’s a major treat when it’s cool enough to put it back on in the Fall. I cannot speak more highly of the duvet insert. I know I’ll have it forever. Worth every penny.

Follow-up Duvet/ Comforter Recommendation

Update April 15, 2026: Boll & Branch recently gifted me their new Signature Vintage Washed Comforter Set. Since I’m such a big fan, as established above, I was very excited to try it out. You can read the full specs above, but the big difference between this duvet and my other one is that the construction is all-in-one, meaning that the top sheet and comforter are combined (there is no separate insert). We’ve recently done away with the top sheet and just use the duvet insert with a cover. With this one, instead of having to wash/change out the duvet cover every week when we change out our sheets, we can just wash the entire thing and put it back on — no more struggling to stuff the duvet back in the cover.

The other key difference is that it's a vintage wash so it looks a bit more relaxed. This might drive me nuts all year long, but I think it’s perfect for the summertime when the vibe overall is a bit more chill and laid-back. It's also nice that the sham covers are included in the set. To complete the rest of the bedding, Boll & Branch also introduced the Percale Vintage Washed Sheet Set with the same wash that includes top sheet (if you want to keep this layer), bottom sheet, and standard pillow cases.

So, I would recommend this set if you’re looking for a relaxed look and an effortless layer.

Duvet Covers That Work With These Inserts

A duvet is not complete without a duvet cover, both to protect it and to add a decorative touch to a bed. If you forgo a top sheet, like many do these days, including myself, the duvet cover needs to be changed along with your sheets on a regular basis so it helps to have backups (that also helps them stay fresher for longer). A duvet cover can make a bold statement with a color or pattern or offer a moment of calm in a neutral color — and since it can be switched out, it can do both, depending on your mood or seasonality. For instance, in the winter, a duvet cover with a pattern like gingham can contribute to a cozy-feeling bed. Or if you’re wanting to lighten up your bedroom for spring (even if it still feels like winter), a duvet cover with a cheerful pop of color might feel right. I have a lot of patterns in my bedroom already so I opt for a white duvet cover with a throw blanket on top. I’ve curated duvet inserts in a range of styles, colors, and fabrics below. Pillows

Costco Down Pillows

There’s long been a rumor that Costco pillows are surprisingly good and affordable. A family friend who doesn’t spare expenses on quality home furnishings confirmed that they’re the real deal. If they’re good enough for her, they’re good enough for me. So, I purchased some for my guest room. I tested them out when I was sleeping in there recently (in the first weeks of bringing my baby home, I’d sneak in there to get sleep while my husband was on duty).

See my opinion on the best white sheets. Here are some of the highlights:

Boll & Branch

This bedding has been my go-to for a long time. It feels so luxurious getting into bed. I prefer a crisp white cotton sheet, and I go for one with a little bit of detail, which I think adds polish. The cotton actually get softer over time. Plus, I really appreciate that it is organic cotton, and Fair Trade Certified at that.
